Taking Pets To The United Kingdom
Moving your furry friend to the United Kingdom requires preparation and compliance with UK import regulations. Below is an overview to ensure your pet’s journey is seamless and stress-free.
Essential Documents for Pet Import to the UK
To bring your pet into the UK, the following documents are required:
- Vaccination book
- Microchip verification
- Rabies certificate
- GB Health Certificate (signed and stamped by the State Vet)
- ToR Number (Transfer of Residence)
- Copy of the owner's passport
- Completed SkyPets Export Form
Transfer of Residence (ToR) Process
If you’re relocating with your pet, you must complete the Transfer of Residence (ToR) application online before your pet’s departure. Approval notice is essential for customs clearance in the UK. Without it, your pet’s consignment may be delayed, incurring additional storage fees.
Pet Import Requirements
To avoid quarantine upon arrival in the UK, ensure your pet meets the following conditions:
Step 1: Microchip
Your pet must have an ISO-compliant 15-digit microchip implanted before receiving the rabies vaccination.
Step 2: Rabies Vaccination
- Administered after the microchip implantation.
- A 21-day waiting period is required for first-time vaccinations. No waiting period applies for boosters if the previous vaccination was valid at the time of the booster.
- Rabies titer tests are required if entering from a high-rabies country, with a three-month waiting period after testing.
Step 3: GB Health Certificate
Completed within 10 days of travel by an accredited veterinarian. For pets entering commercially, this must be done within 48 hours of travel.
Step 4: Approved Entry Ports
Pets must arrive via an approved Border Inspection Post (London Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, or Edinburgh). Advance notice may be required.
Additional Notes for Commercial Pet Imports
A pet’s import is considered commercial if:
- It is under 6 months old.
- Ownership has been less than 6 months.
- The pet is being transferred as a gift, rescue, or sale.
Commercial imports require extra documentation and may incur VAT and customs fees.
Travelling By Air
All pets entering the UK must arrive as manifest cargo unless they are certified service animals. Pets traveling commercially or from outside the EU must adhere to stricter rules, including entry only at approved airports.
