Flying Pets to Europe
Transporting your pet from South Africa to Europe or Switzerland involves a mix of straightforward veterinary requirements and complex logistical considerations. At SkyPets, we’re here to guide you every step of the way, ensuring your pet’s journey is as safe, comfortable, and stress-free as possible.
General Requirements for Pet Travel to Europe
- Microchip: Your pet must be microchipped with an ISO-compliant chip.
- Rabies Vaccination: Administered after microchipping, this vaccine must be given when your pet is at least 3 months old. The vaccine should be up-to-date and meet entry requirements.
- Health Certificate: A health check within 10 days of travel is mandatory to confirm your pet is fit to fly.
European countries no longer accept pet passports for entry. Depending on your destination, additional rules may apply:
- Cyprus and Greece: Pets must be treated for ticks and tapeworms 24–48 hours before check-in.
- Switzerland: Dogs with docked ears or tails are prohibited unless supported by medical documentation. Additionally, specific breeds, such as Pitbulls and Staffordshire Terriers, cannot be imported.
- Sweden: Rules differ for commercial and non-commercial imports. Pets traveling without their owner on the same plane may require TRACES and BALAI certification.
Specific Considerations for Switzerland
Switzerland has its own regulations that closely mirror EU requirements, with some unique rules:
- A rabies vaccination must be administered at least 21 days before entry. For repeat visits, ensure rabies boosters are current.
- Importation is limited to five pets per person, for non-commercial purposes only.
- VAT and customs duties are payable upon arrival and can be costly.
Flight Logistics and Planning
Flights from South Africa to Europe and Switzerland often involve smaller aircraft, which may restrict larger pets. European airports also have specific pet-handling schedules, limiting the number of available flights.
SkyPets has extensive experience navigating these logistical challenges, including finding suitable flights, ensuring compliance with country-specific requirements, and managing complex paperwork.
