Flying Pets To Australia

Bringing your pet to Australia is a significant but rewarding journey. Many families agree that having their furry companions with them makes settling into life down under feel complete.

Australia’s strict biosecurity laws, designed to maintain its rabies-free status, mean the process requires careful planning. Pets from South Africa need a rabies vaccination, a blood test, and an extended waiting period before travel. Import permits, export paperwork, and precisely timed veterinary treatments are also required.

Although flight options from South Africa to Australia are limited, we partner with experienced airlines to ensure your pet’s safety. Most routes include a layover in a pet-friendly hub like Singapore.

While the process can seem complex, with proper guidance and preparation, your pet’s journey to Australia can be smooth and successful.

Start Early – Timing is Key

Planning ahead is crucial when preparing your pet for international travel. If you’re heading to Australia, you’ll need to start the process at least 9–10 months in advance to meet all the biosecurity and regulatory requirements. Pets in South Africa are typically not vaccinated against rabies for international compliance, so early preparation is essential.

Step 2: Rabies Vaccination and Blood Test

The first major step is getting your pet vaccinated against rabies. About 3–4 weeks after the vaccination, your pet will need a Rabies Neutralising Antibody Titre Test (RNATT), conducted by a licensed vet. This test confirms your pet has sufficient antibodies to protect against rabies.

Australia requires that pets wait at least 180 days after the RNATT sample is received by the lab before entry. The test results remain valid for one year.

If the results don’t meet the required standard, the vaccination and test will need to be repeated. Our team can guide you through the process to keep everything on track.

Step 3: Mandatory ID Check

As of November 2024, pets must undergo an identity check before their RNATT blood sample is taken. This check, performed by two independent veterinarians, ensures your pet qualifies for the minimum 10-day quarantine period instead of 30 days. Without this step, quarantine time may increase.

This ID check is critical, and we’ll help you navigate the process to avoid delays or extended quarantine stays.

Step 4: Request a Quote

Once your pet has completed the rabies vaccination and blood test, contact us for a tailored quote. We’ll manage the logistics and documentation, ensuring every step is handled smoothly and professionally.

Step 5: RNATT Certification by a Government Vet

After the RNATT is complete, a government-authorised vet in South Africa must sign the RNATT Declaration. This vet will verify your pet’s rabies vaccination history and blood test results before issuing the certification.

Importantly, the vet who performed the blood test cannot complete the declaration—it must be signed by a different practice. Our team can coordinate this step for you to meet all Australian requirements.

Step 6: Apply for an Import Permit

An import permit is required for your pet to enter Australia. This document is valid for one year, and processing can take up to 12 weeks. It’s vital to apply promptly once the RNATT results are ready.

The Application Requires:

We’ll assist with the application process to ensure everything is submitted correctly and on time.

Step 7: Reserve Quarantine Space

Australia’s quarantine facility is located in Mickleham, Melbourne. If all requirements are met, pets stay in quarantine for only 10 days. However, without proper documentation or if the ID check is missed, this period may extend to 30 days.

Once your import permit is issued, we’ll secure your pet’s spot in quarantine. Availability is limited, so booking early is essential.

Step 8: Vet Appointment for Tick Treatment and Vaccinations

Six weeks before the flight, your pet will need a vet visit for a tick check and application of an approved tick treatment. Dogs may also need the first dose of a Leptospira vaccine if they haven’t been vaccinated already.

We’ll provide your vet with a detailed checklist to ensure all treatments comply with Australian biosecurity regulations.

Step 9: Export Documentation

We’ll handle all the necessary export paperwork, coordinating with veterinarians and South African authorities to ensure everything is finalised before departure.

Step 10: Pre-Flight Vet Check

Three to four weeks before departure, your pet will undergo another vet check to ensure they meet Australia’s health requirements. Dogs will need additional tick and worm treatments, as well as a second Leptospira vaccine. Cats will require a tick check, tick treatment, and worming at this time.

Step 11: Final Vet Visit Within 5 Days of Departure

Your pet will need a final health check within five days of their flight to confirm they are fit for travel. Additional tick and worm treatments are also required at this stage.

We’ll arrange for all final paperwork to be completed and ensure your pet is prepared for their journey.

Step 12: Flight Day

On travel day, we’ll manage the check-in process and provide tracking details so you can monitor your pet’s journey. Some airlines even provide updates and photos during layovers to keep you informed.

Step 13: Arrival in Australia

When your pet arrives, quarantine staff will collect them and transport them to the Mickleham Quarantine Facility. You’ll be notified when they’ve settled in, and the team there will monitor your pet’s health and well-being throughout their stay.

Step 14: Reuniting with Your Pet

After quarantine, you’ll be reunited with your pet to start your new adventure in Australia. If needed, we can arrange transport from Melbourne to your final destination.

We’d love to see photos or videos of your reunion—feel free to share your special moment with us!
